Boldo is an evergreen shrub native to the central region of Chile. A member of the Monimiaceae family, it is well adapted to rocky, well-drained soils and is found on the mountain slopes of the Andes. It is mainly grown for its boldin-rich leaves, traditionally used to support digestive health.
Boldo leaves have a distinctive, slightly bitter flavour and are also used in cooking.
Curiously, Chilean folklore has it that planting boldo in the garden brings good luck.
