Valerian, scientifically known Valeriana officinalis, is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and certain regions of Asia. It belongs to the Valerianaceae family and is highly prized for its sweet-smelling pink or white flowers. Valerian is traditionally used to treat sleep disorders and anxiety, particularly the root extract. The plant has also been used in perfumery for its musky scent. Interestingly, valerian was used during the Second World War to relieve stress and anxiety in civilians during air raids.
